Glen Cameron MRICS on his recent APC success

July 2018 | By Esurv Staff

Glen Cameron MRICS has passed his Assessment of Professional Competence (APC), achieving Member status of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). We caught up with Glen to chat about his Final Assessment and why he chose a career in surveying.

Glen, congratulations, you must be delighted to pass your APC first time. This is quite an achievement, especially when the national first-time pass rate on the valuation pathway is about 50%.

Thank you. I’m incredibly proud and slightly surprised to pass first time. Thankfully all my hard work paid off.

How did e.surv’s APC training programme contribute towards your success?

e.surv’s APC training programme was fantastic. I had regular access to a wide range of colleagues whose broad knowledge base and experience was invaluable.

I also spent time with APC assessors within e.surv who gave the assessor’s view and advice, along with ongoing support from our Learning and Development team (especially Mike Toosey) and my manager.

I would like to thank everyone at e.surv who has helped me along the way and for allowing me the time to study and gain the experience I needed.

The APC is, quite rightly, a challenging assessment. Was there anything that you found particularly difficult?

It’s true that the APC is challenging. A very high level of commitment is required and you’re expected to reach the highest level of professional competence. So, my work-life balance took a bit of a hit in the lead up to the assessment.

However, it’s well worth the effort. As with anything in life, if you put the hard work in it will pay dividends in the end.

So, why was it so important to you to become chartered?

For me, it was about reaching the highest level of professionalism within surveying that I could. The challenge and recognition of years of hard work to reach a level of professionalism that is recognised around the world was something I wanted to achieve and something I am very proud of.

Glen, you’re obviously very passionate about surveying. What inspired you to become a surveyor in the first place?

My father is a Building Surveyor, and his father a Quantity Surveyor – so, I guess it’s in the blood! I’ve always enjoyed meeting people and seeing different types of houses. Therefore, surveying suits me down to the ground.

And, finally, what would you say to others who are considering studying for their APC at e.surv Chartered Surveyors?

I’d say ‘go for it’. As one of the leading residential surveying companies in the UK, e.surv can provide you with an invaluable combination of hands-on experience, industry knowledge, training and support.

If you’re passionate and determined to become the best surveyor you can be, becoming chartered is the obvious next step. e.surv can help you achieve this.
